Mkhitar (real name is Manuk) Sebastatsi studied at the St. Nshan of Sebastia, then in the monasteries of Echmiadzin, Sevan, Karin. In 1693 he gone to Beria, where he met Catholic missionaries. In 1696 he was ordained a celibate priest and in 1699 he was ordained a priest. In 1701 he founded a congregation in Constantinople.
In 1712 the Pope granted Sebastian the title of abbot. In 1715, the congregation moved to Venice to avoid it from Turkish attacks. In 1717, the Venice Senate granted the Congregation St. Lazar Island by charter. Here Sebastatsi built a church, opened a school, trained fellow believers. In St. Lazarus he has been involved in bibliographical work, conducting the philological research of his students, doing translations, publishing books. After Sebastatsi’s death, the monastery was named Mkhitaryan in his honor. While still alive, he was honored with my Second Illuminator Nation, Second Mesrop and other surnames.
Sebastatsi was named after the educational complex in Yerevan.
